Environmental multi-phase fluid mechanics: what, why, how, where to?

چکیده
In April 2009, the Springer journal Environmental FluidMechanics published a special issue on ‘‘Recent Advances on Multi-Phase Flows of Environmental Importance’’ (Env. Fluid Mech., Vol. 9, No. 2, 2009), edited by the same authors of this editorial [1]. That issue featured six high-calibre papers devoted to a range of multi-phase flow topics relevant to environmental and geophysical flows [2–7]; it is believed that these papers provided a complete picture of the state of the art on the observation and modelling of multi-phaseflows. The significance and impact of these scientific contributions may be arguably quantified in terms of citations. For the last 7 years, the special issue articles were cited between 132 and 236 times altogether (as of May 21, 2016) depending upon the database, representing an average of 2.7–4.8 citations per paper per year. Further, some of those papers have inspired, and have served as a backbone of other recent contributions. Arguably, all these articles did significantly contribute to our scientific knowledge on multi-phase flows. Based on the success of that special issue, it was decided to update the state of the art on the subject with the edition of a new one. Distinguished researchers were invited to contribute in this new edition. The current issue contains eight papers (including this editorial) accepted after a rigorous peer-review process from initially ten manuscripts agreed to be submitted to the special issue. The deadline for paper submission was 1 June

Sensitivity analysis of time lapse gravity for monitoring fluid saturation changes in a giant multi-phase gas reservoir located in south of Iran
The time lapse gravity method is a widely used technique to monitor the subsurface density changes in time and space. In hydrocarbon reservoirs, the density variations are due to different factors, such as: substitution of fluids with high density contrast, water influx, gas injection, and the variation in reservoir geomechanical behavior. Considering the monitoring of saturation changes in the...
متن کاملSolving Single Phase Fluid Flow Instability Equations Using Chebyshev Tau- QZ Polynomial
In this article the instability of single phase flow in a circular pipe from laminar to turbulence regime has been investigated. To this end, after finding boundary conditions and equation related to instability of flow in cylindrical coordination system, which is called eigenvalue Orr Sommerfeld equation, the solution method for these equation has been investigated. In this article Chebyshev p...
متن کاملAging, Pensions and Long-term Care: What, Why, Who, How?; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”
Japan has been aging faster than other industrialized nations, and its experience offers useful lessons to others. Japan has been willing to expand its welfare state with a long-term care (LTC) insurance to finance home care and nursing home care for frail elderly. As Ikegami shows, it created new facilities and expanded specialized staffing for home care, developed a c...
متن کاملThree-dimensional visualization of multi-phase (oil/gas/hydrate) plumes
Abstract Visualization of multi-phase jets and plumes is a relatively new subject. Discussions on how to visualize them have not been seen elsewhere. Multi-phase jets and plumes (e.g. a plume from a deep water blowout that consist of a mixture of oil, gas, and gas hydrates) undergo phase changes during the transport of fluids up the water column. Effectively visualizing all the pertinent jet or...
